What to pack for your dog's first stay

First overnight boarding stay coming up? Here's the short list we send every new client at Cleo's Clubhouse. Nothing fancy — just what actually makes the stay smoother.

The essentials

  • Food, pre-portioned. Individual bags or containers labeled by meal are ideal. Sudden food changes are a common cause of upset stomachs, so we always feed your dog's own food.
  • Any medications, in their original containers, with written dosing instructions.
  • Vaccination records — rabies, distemper/parvo, bordetella. Digital copies are fine.
  • Your vet's name and phone number, plus an emergency contact who can make decisions if we can't reach you.
  • A leash and collar with a current ID tag.

The nice-to-haves

  • A worn t-shirt or blanket that smells like home. This one matters more than people think, especially for young dogs and rescues on their first stay.
  • A favorite chew or toy — nothing they could destroy and swallow in pieces.
  • Written notes on quirks: "scared of thunder," "doesn't like being picked up from behind," "loves getting his ears scratched." We read every one.

Three things people forget

  1. Enough food for the full stay plus one extra day. Flights get delayed. Weather happens. An extra meal in the bag means we're not scrambling.
  2. The exact feeding schedule. "Twice a day" is fine. "7:30am and 5:30pm, one cup each, kibble only" is much better.
  3. A note if your dog is on a special diet or has allergies. This one has to be written down, not just mentioned at drop-off.

If you have a question that isn't on the list, just text us. We'd rather over-communicate before the stay than have your dog stressed on day one.
